The most gifted, well trained athletes in the world all utilize coaches. This is not a sign of weakness, but an expression of the individual’s desire to reach his or her full potential. In many ways, the client-therapist relationship is like that of the athlete and his/her coach. A partnership is formed where two people combine resources to achieve desired goals. The coach/therapist’s primary function is to help the athlete/client gain the skills and confidence necessary to perform at a higher level.
Often a client initially comes in seeking help to overcome a specific problem. Sometimes it’s as simple as a desire to become more motivated or get past a plateau in your personal growth. Or it can be depression, anxiety, interpersonal conflict, divorce or separation, grief, stress management, issues within the family or any other matter that concerns you.
The goal of therapy is not to just offer solutions to specific problems, although it often serves that purpose, the goal is to give you the tools to solve your future problems as they arise.
The goal of all therapy should be to help people overcome whatever obstacles are standing between them and their God-given potential. It is my belief that any counseling that stops short of a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ is at best only half a cure. Of course many people who come for counseling are already Christians. To all I offer encouragement and hope; Jesus provides the answers and the healing for their needs and issues.
